The annual Martinmas Hirings took place in Allendale, with the number of servants being large, especially young girls, many of whom had not been in service previously. Master and mistresses were but thinly represented. Young girls, who had not been previously in service, received from ?2 to ?3 3s; older girls ?3 10s to ?5. A girl who was engaged to go to Warwickshire received ?7 10s for the half year. A good many had to leave without getting engagements. A good many visitors were present. |
